World Human Rights Cities Forum Begins Preparations for Next Year
The 2nd Planning Committee meeting for the World Human Rights Cities Forum (WHRCF) 2026 was held last July at the Gwangju Office, Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City. The meeting included a report on the outcomes of WHRCF 2026 and an assessment of its key achievements. Committee members agreed that this year's edition had achieved meaningful results, including the timely choice of theme, the visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and expanded cooperation with universities, while also agreeing on the need to develop ways to broaden civil society participation. Discussions also covered the direction and potential themes for next year's edition.
Building on the outcomes of the 2nd Planning Committee, the 3rd Planning Subcommittee meeting was held on September 15 to further refine and deepen discussions on next year's theme. Preparations for WHRCF 2027 are now in full swing. Please stay tuned for more updates!

Gwangju International Center Takes Part in
Mahidol University's "Peace Festival Week 2026"...
Spreading the Spirit of May 18 Across Asia
Last August, the Gwangju International Center (GIC), which serves as the organizing body of the World Human Rights Cities Forum, took part in "Peace Festival Week 2026" held at Mahidol University in Thailand. Held under the theme "The Spirit of Mahidol for a Peaceful, Democratic, and Just Society: Lessons from Gwangju, South Korea, to the 50th Anniversary of 6 October," the event drew a powerful connection between the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and Thailand's Thammasat University massacre. Notably, Mahidol University, the event's host, visited Gwangju earlier this year and has since gone on to participate in the Forum as well, reflecting an ongoing and growing partnership between the two institutions.
